From Thought Partner to Ongoing Teammate

Hello. Thank you for joining us today. My name is Nick.

I'm Danielle. And we work on the developer experience team here at OpenAI. Let me start with a poll from the crowd.

Go ahead and raise your hand if when you start your day, your inbox is empty, you're full of clarity, and exactly what you need to do. You've got one, two. All right.

Let's put your hands down. All right. Now, go ahead and raise your hand if when you open your laptop, it feels like a clown has jumped out of your laptop.

It's full of chaos. It's like a jack in the box. All right.

A lot more hands. All right. So here's what that looks like.

You open your laptop, you check your email, you catch up on Slack, and a couple dashboards. And then you finally decide we need to get done. But the problem is, it's everything.

And by now, half the morning is gone, and you're just starting your real job. So we know that ChatGPT can change this. But how?

So these are our most prolific ChatGPT work users here at OpenAI. They're all outliers within their respective orgs. And me and Danielle interviewed them because we wanted to know exactly what they were doing differently.

What was their secret? So we're going to show you exactly how they're leveraging ChatGPT and what else that empowers them to do. So let me introduce our champions.

This is Dani. She leads social for OpenAI developers. We then have Adrian, who leads competitive research.

And finally, Casey, who's our chief people officer here at OpenAI. These are three very different jobs. But our conversations with Dani, Adrian, and Casey revealed a pattern in how they had taken on work that seemed impossible just a few months ago.

Each of them is a ChatGPT work power user. You already know ChatGPT as a thought partner. And Codex as a coding agent.

ChatGPT work is your agentic teammate for getting things done. You tell it what you want done, and you give it the context that it needs to do it. Let's say I'm running an event like DevDay.

I can hand over the agenda for DevDay and have it build a site that asks what you're working on and helps you pick which sessions you should attend. Totally unbiased, of course. ChatGPT work, or as we usually call it, chat, can also take on ongoing tasks.

And when you can hand off more of your day-to-day work, you can spend more time working on what you're truly excited about. You probably have something in mind already. Maybe it's an idea that you really want to explore.

Maybe it's a project that you'd love to get started on.

Dani: Launch Monitoring and Community Attention

And you will, when things slow down. What's in the way? Where are you the bottleneck?

And if Chat could take on a responsibility for you, what would that free you up to do? So let's see what that handoff enabled for Danny, Adrian, and Casey. Let's start with Danny.

Danny leads developer social here at OpenAI. So her job is to shepherd products through launch and then listen to the developer community for feedback. She also keeps key stakeholders in loop with how those launches are going.

GPT-6 Astra。And Danny told us that she could spend an entire day just monitoring these launches and then keeping people in the loop. And for Danny, stakeholders mean executives. So imagine you just helped launch GPT-6 Astra.

And now the CEO, Sam Altman, is asking you how the launch is going. And so Danny's job is to distill the feedback from the noise.

And here's how she does it. So she uses ChatGPT to pull together how the launch posts are performing and what developers are saying. And she pulls that into a ChatGPT site for her and her team.

So when Sam is asking, how's the launch going, she can share a live report. But a live report is only useful if somebody is keeping up to date and keeping those metric numbers up to date. And so that's the job that she's handed off to her dot.

It reads the social feed just like Danny would and adds posts to her site. After the launch, she can share a more detailed view with her and her team because that same dot has been adding posts to her content sheet with engagement metrics for every single post. This makes it easier for her and her team to understand what content is working and what's not working.

So Danny used to do most of that monitoring and collection herself, which meant hours of scrolling. But now she can focus on the bigger picture, like figuring out how we should respond to those developers. And also, this is just better than only collecting the sentiment.

Also, she can bring back what she's learning to people in product engineering, as well as, very important stakeholders like Danielle and myself in developer experience. She also has to keep up with everything happening in Slack. The sheer number of channels that Danny has to be in because she's helping launch so many products means that it's really easy to not keep up with all those updates.

So what she's done is she has her dot monitor those channels for her. It pings her when something's urgent and lets her know when she needs to chime in.

Adrian: Research Methods and Human Review

All of this means that Danielle can spend more time with the developer community and spotlight their work. And this is the work that Danny loves to do. So, Danny can hand off all of that work because she knows what questions she's going to get asked.

So, think about what question you're going to get asked and how could chat have the answer ready before somebody asks. And that leads us to Adrian. So, Adrian leads competitive research.

His team is just two people. Colleagues from sales, from product, GTM, strategy, all across the org come to Adrian with questions about the competition. What's changed in a competitor's product?

What are customers saying? And what does that mean for us? Each question can turn into days of research and with a small team of just two.

Deciding what to investigate also means deciding what goes unanswered.

So, to answer more of those questions, Adrian gave chat a way to take on more of that research. He put his full research method into a plugin. And that plugin does what he does.

It investigates, it finds patterns, and it challenges the findings. He needs an answer that can hold up well under scrutiny. So, how does that actually work?

Adrian wanted to understand why a competitor's revenue was growing so quickly. Was it winning a new group of really large customers? He had his DOT look across calls, across newsletters, and podcasts.

The evidence didn't support that explanation. So, in another investigation, he had his DOT go back through 90 days of sales call transcripts and found reasons for lost deals that were not captured in the CRM summaries that the salespeople left. And that gave him a much fuller picture of why customers were choosing a competitor.

He also built Compete Corner. It's a site that organizes research around the questions that he knows he's going to get asked. Colleagues can go to Compete Corner and explore findings and check the sources without asking Adrian to walk them through it.

Adrian passed off the job of keeping Compete Corner up to date. His DOT picks up the competitive questions straight from Slack. It then researches them using his plugin.

Compete Corner。And then it brings those findings into his space for review. Adrian or his teammate can then check the conclusions and add additional context. Once they approve, his DOT can then update Compete Corner on his behalf.

Adrian can also just send his DOT a text. On his commute in the morning, he sees a competitor announcement. He can forward it straight to his DOT, where it does exactly the same workflow without Adrian needing to be in ChatGPT or at his laptop at all.

And the page is marked ready for review when he arrives at his desk. So what does that change for a team of two like Adrian's? Well, it enables Adrian to do all sorts of new things like delivering competitive intel in an entirely new way.

He built this tool. It's called Model Galaxy. And it's an interactive visualization of performance, cost, and latency across any benchmark for frontier models.

Of course, made with GPT-6 Astra. So think about an investigation that you do regularly. Maybe it's a customer problem.

Maybe it's a bug that just refuses to be squashed. You already know what makes for a good answer and when to challenge it. what sources you should trust. So show Chat how you would approach that exact same investigation.

It can do more of the gathering and the checking so that you can actually focus on the findings and what you should do about them.

Casey: Making Shared Expertise Accessible

What if people could draw on your expertise without having to come to you every time they have a question? This brings us to Casey. He's our chief people officer here at OpenAI.

And he's thinking about how AI is changing the way teams work together. So Casey and his team study organizations inside and outside the industry. And they're trying to learn how these teams are adapting to AI.

And through all this research, they are accumulating a treasure trove of meeting notes, papers, and articles. And they bring all this research together into one shared knowledge base. He's used that research to build a coaching site for leaders.

It's powered by GPT Live. So you can talk to it about how your team works and where things are getting stuck. It helps you figure out what to hand over to AI and how your team could work differently.

But how does Casey's team keep this knowledge base that's powering the coach up to date? So Casey and his team bring their meeting notes and research together on a shared page. And this is how they leverage their individual explorations together into one resource.

They also give the page instructions for organizing new research. So when an agent works in that page, it can ascribe to a consistent style. And this same knowledge feeds the coaching site.

As the team adds what they're learning, the coach can use it in his suggestions. So go ahead and ask yourself, what are you an expert on? And how could you make that accessible to more people?

So you've now seen what our champions are taking on with chat. And now we're going to show you how to put it to work. As you've probably already seen in the keynote today, we've launched ChatGPT space.

Spaces: Shared Pages and Private Chats

Yeah, that's awesome. So you've already seen Adrian's Compete Corner site. Now I'm going to show you the space that hydrates it.

Chat brings its research into Adrian's space. He and his teammate work through the findings, all in the same page at the same time. Adrian can question a conclusion.

His teammate can comment and add a source that helps answer it. They each work with their own chat in the space to investigate further right there. Their chats each stay private to them, but the edits on the page are shared.

The research that they develop here then feeds Compete Corner. We also mentioned that Casey is using page instructions to keep things consistent. Like an agents.md file for a code base, they describe the working practices that agents should follow on a particular page.

And pages are just the beginning.

You can also store files in your space and soon you're going to be able to create slides, sheets and so much more. So you and your teammates and your agents work together all in the same place without leaving ChatGPT. So to try this yourself, bring the work that you want to do with Chat into your space.

Add the context that it needs and then you can invite your teammates. My favorite way to do this is to start with a long Chat thread and ask it to turn what you're working on into a page. From there, you can pair directly with your agent and continue refining.

As you talk to your agent, it's going to keep the page updated. Then, you can invite your teammates. They can edit the same page at the same time.

And again, those edits become shared in the page. Now, working together in one space is a great way to start.

Dots: Ongoing Responsibilities and Communication

But work continues to change and somebody does have to keep track of it all. You probably know what's coming next because today we have also launched Dots. Oh, so cute.

So remember how Dani handed off monitoring the launch? So here's how she did it. Her Dot has its own computer in the cloud as well as its own browser.

So it goes to the social feed just like Dani would and it collects the posts while keeping her content sheet up to date. Then, she can add it to the Slack channel she wants it to follow. And she can also tell what to do.

This could be just be a fly on the wall or also be an active participant. So when something needs her attention, it can send her a ping on Slack. So what she's done here is she's given her Dot an ongoing responsibility.

Keep track of what's happening and then bring her in when she's needed.

And you can hand off something from wherever you are. We mentioned that Adrian can text his Dot in his commute. He can also just give his Dot a call or ping on Slack.

His Dot is reachable wherever he is and it's always the same Dot with the same context. So when he's messaging on Slack or he's getting a call, it's always the same entity. And your Dot is always on because it lives in the cloud.

It can text you an update or a question when it needs you to weigh in. And it can also access your local files when you're on your laptop. So how do you turn your Dot into your own sidekick?

Well, the first thing you're going to do is you're going to give it a name. I've named mine Wyatt. It's the name of my childhood dog.

The next thing you're going to do is give accessories. I like having mine kind of look like the frog guy with the fun eyes and the monocle.

And after that, you're going to give it a responsibility. You're going to tell it what you want, what you really want. And then you're going to tell it where to reach you.

You can add it to Slack. You can have it text you when messaging is coming out soon. But the point is you don't have to figure this all out up front.

Your Dot will kind of learn your working style as you work with it. It'll learn your preferences and it'll get better over time. By the way, if you would like to build your own custom Dot, we do have a Dot shop downstairs.

So do check that out after this talk. I named my Dot Ginger after the Spice Girl, not a dog. All right.

And now it's time for you to hand off the part of your job that you won't miss. So I want you to feel free to take a picture of this QR code. You can do it right now.

Pull your phone out. This is going to open up ChatGPT on your phone. And it will ask you just a little bit about your work.

It'll also try to infer your work. And once it does that, it's going to suggest something that you can hand off first. And it will also tell you where space and dots might fit into that.

So feel free to take a picture. Hold on to that for later. We still have a little more.

So, come back to that in a second. A few more. A few more photos.

继续。All right. All right. Moving on.

So we started this by asking what are champions we're doing differently? And now you're in on their secret. Danny can spend more time with the developer community.

Adrian can deliver competitive insights to more people and in new ways. And Casey can share his expertise without having to be in every conversation.

Choosing What to Hand Off

I have a personal version of this. I started at OpenAI working on technical onboarding. My job was to help new engineering colleagues onboard and get up to date on our infrastructure and our architecture.

I automated a lot of that work away with ChatGPT. It's a true story. And that freed me up to move to developer experience.

And now I'm here giving this talk. Yeah. Thanks.

Now that felt exciting, but it also felt a little bit strange. I was changing work that I knew how to do and making room for work that I wanted to and was excited to try. But that's what I want to leave you with.
